The History

The Roots of Slavery

The Door of No Return

The Door of No Return

Over the course of more than three and a half centuries, West Africa exported about half of the roughly 12.5 million Africans who entered the Atlantic. The warfare, disruption, underdevelopment, and population decline resulting from the slave trade had a profound impact on West Africa. As the turn of the twentieth century approached, Europeans became better able to penetrate the interior and quickly engaged in efforts to colonize the continent. This "Scramble for Africa" installed the French and British as the primary colonizers in the region. Until the start of successful anti-colonial independence movements after the Second World War, Liberia was the sole independent nation in the region.

The Door of No Return

In addition to the nearly 50 percent of the total number of enslaved Africans in the United States from these two regions, a considerable number of slaves had their origins on the so-called “Slave Coast,” which is now the West African nation of Ghana, as well as neighboring parts of the Windward Coast, now Ivory Coast. For centuries, Africans walked through the infamous "Door Of No Return" at Cape Coast castle directly into slave ships, never to set foot in their homelands again. These days, the portal of this massive fort so central to one of history's greatest crimes has a new name, hung on a sign leading back in from the roaring Atlantic Ocean:

"The Door Of Return."

Kwame Appiah kubi

Maurice was born in Bermuda and has been traveling the world since the age of 5. He loves the pleasure and adventures of travel and has made a personal connection with the continent of Africa. In 2000, Maurice along with his family took a trip to South Africa to build a church in a small town called Bisho. After being there for a few weeks, he made it his mission to return as much as possible.

In 2012, Maurice invited a small group of his friends to travel with him to Cape Town, South Africa. That was only the beginning of his new journey to explore Africa and share this amazing country with others who didn't mind the long journey to get there. In 2013, he started Two Oceans Travel & Tours and hasn't looked back. Each year 25-30 people take advantage of experiencing all that the trips have to offer, and for a great price.

Maurice has a BA in Communications/Media and a MA in Management. He is passionate about travel throughout Africa and will be adding new destinations such as Botswana, Tanzania, Zambia and other countries to his roster in 2022.
